"EU should protect Belarusian online opposition"

Dutch Member of European Parliament Marietje Schaake (D66/ALDE) is worried about today's detainment of several web-administrators by the Belarusian authorities. In the run-up to parliamentary elections on September 23rd the KGB  cracked down on two popular online opposition groups. Schaake: "this is a clear violation of freedom of expression and assembly online, it shows that authoritarian regimes are very much aware of the potential of peaceful political rallying via social media and fear the intangible power of online opposition movements. The EU should prevent EU companies from assisting the Belarusian authorities in cracking down on dissent online. This incident requires action and our utmost attention. I call on the Lukashenko administration to release those arrested and respect human rights and fundamental freedoms." Schaake has submitted parliamentary puestions (below) to the European Commission in order to raise the case and seek EU action. Please find the answer of the Commission here.
